The orphanage does have physiotherapists and some teachers with sign and speech and language therapy training, but with 500 children in the whole orphanage, there just aren’t enough staff to provide input to all the children. The children with the most severe and multiple disabilities are the least likely to get any input.
This is why at 1Step2Step, we wish to have physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists to work alongside the portage workers to help children reach their milestones and make strides to develop their full potential. This is part of our long-term goal, but at present we seek advice from therapists who support our work, both here in Thailand and from UK. The help they offer is a valuable contribution to our work in the orphanage.
